e-150 Check Engine Light

I have a 94 E-150 5.8l. The check engine light is on and the engine is in a high idle. Does any one know what could be causing this? Any advice would be appreciated. The light use to come on, but always go off. Now it is just on.

Thank you!!!

It could be anything. If you don't want to pay the dealer to check the codes, why don't you pick up an OBD II code reader from an auto parts store for $70-100 and read the codes yourself? Once you've got the codes, put them here and people can give you much more precise feedback.

Really, it's the best approach. One trip to the dealer to check codes is going to cost you more than that. If you don't read the codes, you're just going to waste money throwing parts into it until you trip over the actual issue, if you even find it at all.

EDIT: Here, it's $53 on Amazon with free shipping:

EDIT #2: Once you've got the codes, post them in the 5.4 section of the forum and people can help you there.

Agreed, Smokey6111 should heed his Check Engine Light & recover the Fault Codes & that a '94 is OBD1 system. However, his options are't limited to; buy a Fault Code Reader or "pay the dealer to check the codes".

Most auto parts stores are happy "to check codes" for free.

My bad, I didn't catch the year.

I've never had an auto parts store check codes; I didn't know they did that! I learn something new everyday...

I have tried to get the codes by going to a mechanic and a auto zone. They all said they didn't have the adapter or I don't have a adapter on the van to connect to to get the codes from because its old.

The code reader is only $22.00 at Amazon, O'Reilly auto parts also sells them:
Amazon.com: Equus 3145 Ford Digital Code Reader: Automotive

Here is your plug and no adapter needed:

A bad Temp (Sensor) or connector for the computer will do that, its not the same thing as a Temp (sender) for the IP gauge. It will stay on a cold start loop (high idle) forever untill the computer knows the engine is warming up!
