I was looking at the $17 ones at Oriellys. I was actually about to get them, then I came across these in a storage container at work. The price tag on the oilpan was $50, so I think I did ok price wise. They aren't the best or worst shocks, but they will be better than nothing. I cut some 3/8" steel tabs to weld up some mounts. I was going to make my own adapters like pictured, then it hit me, to just weld the tabs on the shock mount bracket and save a step. I also have tabs made for the upper mount, gonna make it just a bit taller than the ones pictured.
So I've been doing a little booty fab work at the shop. I'm not done grinding on these before paint, but I think they will do the trick for my bottom front mounts. I cut them out of scrap 3/16" plate with a plasma cutter, then grinded them smooth, and had a welder at my shop burn em together since my welding skillz are minimal. They still need more grinding inside so the big bolt will sit flush and have enough clearance off the shock.
The sockets are exactly the right length.
I think this should be stout enough...
I still need to finish grinding so it has more clearance...
I gotta get the truck to my shop to get the uppers started. But at least I got something going.
Looks good. Holes could of been maybe just a C hair higher for better clearance but looks like it will work. A guy could make these out of pieces of square tube as well with the top cut out to eliminate the welding. Are you going to weld the bolt head tops? I would.
Yeah I searched our metal yard, but couldn't find any tubing the right size. That was my original plan. So I just fiddled with some flat plate. Yes I'm welding the bolt head after I grind the inside welds. Right now the hex head hits the weld beads so it won't sit down flat. I estimate it should have just shy of a 1/4" of clearance. It's hard to see that in the pics. Best part about these is the price, free!!!
I thought about buying a 20' stick of the right size tubing, and some hardware. Them sell em for $39.99 a set. I'm also trying to think up other simple fab stuff to make in my off time at work to maybe help buy parts!!
Don't think these would be too much in demand. It's a fix for an old style that's almost all but gone. No one uses pin style anymore really I don't think. The other option would of been to put tabs on bottom.
Went by pull a part today. Found these upper shock towers on an 89 F250 4x4 for $11.87. Not only do they have the mount holes I need, but they are taller than my current ones, so these longer shocks will fit better. One step closer!!!
