Need longer shocks
Need longer shocks
I just got done putting a lift on my 74 F-250 highboy. I need extended shocks. does anyone know where i can find some nitro shocks? its around a 6in lift on top of the highboy stance. Ive been looking and i cant find any so far. Can someone steer me in the right direction.
The stud configuration limits shock selection and the location of the mounting points limit suspension travel. Many manufacturers provide a chock that will work, but I have found that they fall on the short side and limit suspension extension, or they are too long and bottom out before the spring has fully compressed.
The fix can be achieved a couple of dofferent ways.
1) buy some off the shelf shocks and deal with it.
2) Purchase some 90's or 99 to 04 F250 / F350 front shock mounts. These are bolt on, and are longer than your current mounts. This permits you to use the more common and more available loop style shocks. These mounts bolt to the frame and are used in a veriety of aftermarket configurations. Cheap too.
This will require the addition of weld on tabs for the lower shock mount. Again, easy to install, and cheap to upgrade.
3) make custom shock mounts, and install a much longer shock that permits proper wheel travel.
A longer stroke shock that does not bottom out, or reach its extended limits will not hinder wheel travel during off road use:

This configuration will reall open up the options for the use of more current shocks. You can pick and choose what set up you want. You will not be limyed to just old style twin tube shocks any longer. Up grade the mounts and get some fancy new shocks.
