How many of you guys (or gals) have been out deer hunting yet this fall? I have been a few times already. Saw nothing but does. What kinds of bow do you have? I have a Reflex Bighorn Intruder. I am shooting 29" Beman Carbon Matrix arrows.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 11-Oct-02 AT 00:33 AM (EST)]30 pt buck! Must be using the east coast count.......
Getting prepped to go next week! We're after deer, elk, and maybe a bear this year. Since I can't hit dirt with a bow, I'll be taking both my Savage 7mm Remington Mag and my trusty Marlin 30-30.
We have a major concern here with the apparent rapid spread of Chronic Wasting Disease. I'm not sure what the future is for big game hunting in Colorado and a few other states that have found this disease. For those of you that don't know what it is, CWD is very similar to mad cow disease. There has been no definative link to humans contracting this, but then again, there is little data available.
Nope..this is the 1st year in 15 I haven't put in for a zone. Just too busy moving & settling in. BUT, have been planning for over a week with friends for Next year, muzzleloaders on horseback & rifles here in Calif & Nevada. Never tried bowhunting, although lots of friends do.
Gotta wait till December for black powder in Nebraska. After everyone else has chased them around for a month. If you want a challange, go bow or black powder deer hunting out on the plains. Last year I took mine at 150 yards. Wasn't sure what kind of pennetration id have with my hawkins, but it was enough.
Man don't get me started, I just filled my double antelope tags, kinda like a preseason deer season for me!! Got one with my Ruger M77 MkII 30-06 with vari-x 2 at 300 yds, and got another with my trusty side kick M1 Garand at 300yds on a dead run with open sights! I think there was a bit of luck on that one, maybe the 5 empty shells at my feet had something to do with it!
As you can see I already have deer fever big time, can wait to get up north an fill my double mulely tags (I even saw the big one while banging away at antelope).
Ya I'm drooling...
all I can say is, everyone please be safe this fall and wear your orange, and please respect the rights of land owners, getting the big one isn't worth the time in the pen.
You guys are all lucky. Living here in Southern California they have closed moset of our national forests to all recreational activities like hunting, hiking, etc. because of the fire danger right now. We need 2 inches of rain before they will reopen. The only 30 point bucks I will get to see will all the people at the zoo pointing to the deer when I chaperone my sisters class to the zoo field trip.
Anyone hear about Chronic Wasting Disease? It has infected deer here in Wisconsin and have conducted open hunts trying to rid the disease. It sounds like it is spreading else where. Good luck to all.
For good information on CWD go to the Colorado Div. of Wildlife page. They have a great article on the history and spread of this since it's discovery. Covers mostly the western part of the plains states, Colorado, Wyoming, etc. I will have any animals I bag tested this year, for a minimal cost of $17 per.

I heard this summer that 5 people in Wisconsin had died from Creutzfeld-Jacob disease ,(human form of Mad Cow), which is similar to CWD. The report stated that all had consumed large amounts of wild game meat. Not sure of the time frame of these deaths, I think all were in the past year. No solid connection to CWD, but sure sends out some alarms. I also just read an article where 8 meat processing plants were surveyed, agai in Wisconsin, and 7 of them were NOT going to process any wild game this year. Not so much their fear of CWD, but potential loss of business from regular customers scared off.
