wrong starter
I have a 1978 F100, 300 I6
i swap engine, (1976 as per casting number ) and tranny.
i went from a 3 / tree to a wagner T19.
everything eventually worked. i had to move the cross member bracket.etc.
the only thing that is not right, is the starter.
(i used my old flywheel, the one that came with the 1976 engine was rusted and teeth missing. from the look of it, the two flywheel were identical)
For me to have a starter, i need to offset the starte by about .400 out.
(i cant figure out how to post picture on my message)

I bought so far 3 starter, before i realized it was hitting the flywheel once the engine was started.
one 1977 from the scrap yard. new 1978, new 1976. and finally the one in there is a new 1976 with 2 spacer.
can someone explain to me what i did wrong/ or is there a specific starter i need with a T19.
sincerely

Automatic trans trucks take a different starter, Ford DT0Z-11002-A, Motorcraft SA-709A.
However, both starters take the same starter drive.
The only other thing I can think of would be that there is either excessive flywheel runout, the flwheel is warped or possibly the bellhousing is not full seated and square with the face of the block.
Other than that, I'm at a loss. Anyone else have any ideas??

The flywheel that is currently in the truck, was my original one.
it work nice never had an issue. I wnet back this morning under the truck, and i am thinking the bell housing is different...

Both housing, the one from the 3 speed and the T19, look like they match the engine exactly where they are supposed too.
Because the starter bolt to the housing, is it possible i need a completely different starter for a T19.??

it absolutely drive me crazy, i know there is something. ( and most likley real stupid in the first place) i am missing.
But if i put the starter where it is supposed to go, look at the picture, the flywheel chew the aluminum portion of the casing circled.
and it chew the first 1/4 inch or so of the teeth of the starter.
correct me if i am wrong, the starter bolt directly to the tranny housing, no spacer of any kind, nothing.
the flywheel bolt directly to the engine, no spacer or any kind.
If the flywheel was off center by .400, the whole engine would shake like a earthquake.
according to autozone a 1976 and a 1978 with manual transmission the starter is different
autozone 1978 ford f100 300 Part Number: 3154

autozone 1976 ford f100 300 Part Number: 3132

i recently had to replace the starter on a 74f100. i bought the 1 yr warranty starter from o'reillys (Part # 03-0216X). the starter looked exactly like my old one but when installed and started it was whistling and grinding, i removed it and compared to my old one i noticed the bendix was longer on the new one. the manager at o'reillys was giving me a hard time because my old starter had oil/grime on it saying this was why, but i asked him to measure the bendix and he quickly found out he was wrong. he brought out another 1yr starter and it was also longer then he bought out a lifetime starter and for some reason it was the same as my old oil covered one. im not saying you have the same problem but anything is possible, ask to look at the bendix length on a couple starters for your year/transmission truck.

this time i took picture under.
I still need to offset the starter.
Does the fly wheel appears to be at the right place? http://www.turboimagehost.com/p/9935..._8733.JPG.html
on the second picture, the fly wheel is flush with the recess on the housing. http://www.turboimagehost.com/p/9935..._8735.JPG.html
