Hood Fading

I have a 1988 Ford F150 XLT Lariat and the paint on the hood is fading. I have tried waxes to try to treat the dull places on the hood. Would using a rubbing compound help?

Hi, ford had a bad problem with paint back in those years. You could try compounding it but use 3M micro finishing compound it is real fine and is safe for clear coats if it brings it back then I would suggest going to a local body shop and talking to them about spraying on a couple of coats of clear they can sand it with 1,000 grit sand paper and spray the clear and that will hold the shine. If the paint is starting to peel like most of them did then it is time for a repaint. John

Dull places on the hood? Sounds like the paint is a metallic single stage. Your paint is over 10 yrs. old. This is past single stage life expectancy for metallics. Oxidation (erosion of the gloss: e.g., think of a canoe with a gell coat) has occured and exposed the metallics hence the dull sections. You can spend all day polishing with lack luster results. If your finish is a solid color then polishing will work. Use the product mentioned in the above post.
