ok I know this question has probably been beat like a dead cat. How do you know if you have a 351 or 400. I was thinking..I have the sticker on the valve cover that says 351/400. I just assumed I had a 351 but dont know for sure. Any certain way to tell on the outside of the engine without breaking the engine apart? btw the original owner dropped in a new engine after he put a 100K on the original motor.. this one has 37k on it..
i thought you could take off oil pan and measure the stroke.
other than that you might have to pull the head and measure the stroke.
thats what i have found in the search.
bring the engine up to tdc on the #1 piston.
spin the motor 180 degrees to get #1 to bdc.
take a wooden dowel and insert it into the cylinder and measure how far down into the cylinder it goes.
compare that measurement with the stroke number for each engine.
what poison is saying is pretty easy. TDC on #1, get wood dowel about 6" long or better, put in spark plug hole till it touches piston. make a mark on the dowel where it makes contact with an easy to see reference point. Turn the engine over exactly 180* and make another mark on the dowel. measure that mark and get back to us if you are not sure.
make sure to keep turning in the same direction and do not back up to get to your TDC mark or you add chain slack into the problem.
