Manual choke conversion cable length

Most parts houses list two cable lengths for converting to manual choke. Can some of you share what you found to be the best? Thanks!

Short as possible, with a hole carefully drilled through the firewall right behind the pass side of the carb. There is a spot that is clear if you look carefully.

I have put many of these on different vehicles, and each time I tried to put it around the steering column under the dash, and run the it through an existing hole around the column, then bend it around the back of the engine and up to the pass side of the carb, it never works very well. Too many bends, and the cable wants to flop instead of actuating the choke.
