Over the weekend , I was hauling some eqipment and lost the brakes on my truck and trailer . The brake pedal is hard as a rock there for I think thats the reason I had no trailer brakes , but where do I need to start looking to figure whats the cause ?
Not really. The only things the vacuum pump really runs on these truck is the brake booster and a couple things on the climate controls. The red "brake" light on the dash will illuminate if the vac pump is out as well.
Not a bad job to replace. If you end up replacing one, make sure you have access to a power steering pump pulley tool so remove and re-install the pulley on the VP. Also, you'll need to put one of the bolt into the pump before you install the pulley, or you will get to practice the removal and installation process again!
Everybody seems to have less than favorable luck with the pump that Airtex makes, but then again I have heard mixed reviews on all of them. I would get the best one you can afford since the function of your brakes rests on that pump, but I'm not sure whaich one to recommend. I replaced mine a few months back with one made by either A-1 Cardone or Dorman (I honestly don't recall), and I've had good luck with it so far. I spend around $80 for mine.
