Fuel issues
Fuel issues
I have a 97 f-250 with 175,000 miles. Last weekend I noticed the fuel filter light coming on the truck. I didnt drive it during the week, and Friday I replaced the filter and took off down the road. I made it about 3 miles until the light came on and soon after the truck started losing power and died. I pulled the truck back to the house that night, and the following morning I pulled the filter and cleaned out the bowl real good. I had sediment in there but nothing incredibly horrible. I also removed the heater while I was in there because the coating on it seemed to flake off really easily. I took off again and made it into town and got half way home before the light came on again and then died out. Next, i cleaned the FPR screen which was pretty dirty and drove it around the neighborhood. I noticed that under acceleration the light would come on and if you continued on accelerating it would be begin to sputter unless you let off of it.
So my next question is, Is there another screen/filter on the FPR to look for? Should I clean both sides of the screen? What about the pickup screens in the tanks? This problem happens no matter which tank is used.
Last year I had a problem with the front tank doing this but it eventually cleared up on its on after using a fuel treatment. Also the last few tanks of fuel I have used, I have had to run the tank down pretty low before refueling. So I'm thinking the pickup screens may be clogged.
I'm going to pull the screens out this weekend and check them. Is it easier to removed the bed and service them from the top, or drop the tanks? And are there any additional screens or filters to look for?
Sorry for the long post and thanks for any help.
