I'm thinking about putting in a new set of glow plugs before winter arrives since i got the truck used and am unsure of their age. Id rather change them now instead of when its 15 deg outside.
So what brands should i stay away from and what brand should i buy?
not sure there are any better than the rest but i always trust my local ford dealership for high quality parts. they are about the same price as aftermarket.
I would also suggest only replacing the bad glow plugs. they are known to last long. test them by putting your test light on the positive post of the battery, unplug the valve cover gasket and put your test light on one of the four outside pins, and the glow plug should provide a ground. if you want to be safe there is also specs on how many ohms it should have, but im not sure what it is. if you check your glow plugs and they are good your only worry would be your relay going out. check and make sure that the relay doesnt get hot after use. the chance of enough glow plugs going out in one winter too which it wont start is slim. but one relay will do it.
The test light will only tell you if it is total junk, If you use a hom meter it should read 2.0 homs or less.
If i was doing it i would replace all 8 and the glowplug relay. a little trick is use a 4 inch piece of Vacume hose and after you brake it lose with a 10MM deep socket push the hose on the end and spin it out with that. and I only use ford glow plugs. Ebay set of 8 cheap.

Remember this, a GP is not unlike a hot plate or range top (old school type) They heat up by resistance. When one or two need replacing, I would bet the others aren't far behind despite any ohm readings. At least that is my opinion. When I go in to replace one, they will all get replaced. At that point I will have 3-4 of the best ones for spares.
I agree, Motorcraft, and stay away from Autolites from what I have heard.
Ok i was going to Ohm test them. I was just looking for what kind to buy if they do fail. And going with Tenn.'s side of view as if i'm in there i'm going to change them all.

Here's a note for all the well wishers and testers here. I recently ohmed all injectors and GPs. It is no easy task with simple probes that come with a digital meter. The pins are very close together and the process was laborious at best. Next time I will have a better solution such as a better connector on the end of the probe and grounding clip. I'm sure someone has figured this out without buying or fabricating a plug. I am all ears.
