Ok all. Getting ready to weld up a winch bumper. My question is what are y'alls opinion on the different "name brand" winches. I.E. Warn, Mile Marker, Smittybilt.
My second question is about capacity. My truck is a 74 f250 4x4 with a 460 conversion etc. So my weight should be around 5,500 lbs or so. Is an 8,000 lb winch enough or would a 10,000 or 12,000 be a better idea.
Throw those opinions out there before I buy a new or used winch.
Brands, consider how much you plan on using and line speed. You do get what you pay for. Some of the cheaper models have held up well in tests against the brand names. I had a shootout between them, but can't find it again. Capacity, twice the weight of your vehicle is a good rule of thumb.
I'd go with at least a 10,000. I like my warn winches but I also have a 8000lb Ramsey. I see 12,000 lb warns come up from time to time around here for pretty good deals although I got mine basically new for $500! ****** blocks are your friend for more pulling power
Do you plan on building a simple tube bumper with winch on top or a bumper with winch hidden inside? I managed to hide my 12,000 warn up front with only the fairlead on the front but you would need a 3" body lift and some cutting/welding of the bottom of rad support to fit it real nice and tight hidden away.
No tubes. It will be a full on winch behind the bumper 1/4" plate with 3/8" mounts for the bumper and winch.
I did a bit of research. I will more than likely buy a 12k. I just don't know if almost double the price for a warn is worth it. I know they are nice but are they that much better of a winch.
I did quite a bit of winching in the army so I know how and what to do and the use of anchors and ****** blocks and what not. I just have no experience with civilian winches.
1/4" plate is HEAVY! 3/16 is what I used and I think is a perfect happy medium.
I would definitely upgrade your alternator to a minimum of the 3G, 130amp upgrade. I got a shop locally to build me a GM large case, 1 wire internally regulated 160 amp alternator but the best part is it does 100 amp at idle. He said I needed to run dual belts on it as it would slip on this one and that's what I did.
I also run dual batteries on a painless switch with a toggle on dash to engage/ disengage. Not to mention wireless remotes for each winch front/back on different frequencies that work over 100 feet away. Got those on EBay
Yep I agree I already have a 3G in and the second battery tray. I also have the isolator. It is not installed yet. I will do all of the electrical at once when I get the winch.
