What to do at 100K?

So I am just getting my dad's E99 truck, I traded him my truck. It has 100K on it so I would like to know what items need to be replaced for preventative maintenance sake.

I am doing an oil change, new radiator hoses, new belt, new idler pulley, coolant flush, new themostate and housing and will be getting a John Woods tranny as soon as I sell a car.

It is all stock at this point and will be doing the popular mods as time goes on but for this thread, I am just referring to parts that need to be replaced or checked.

I will be pulling a heavy 5th wheel trailer with it so I want to make sure everything is up to par. Anything else that should be replace at 100K?

Thanks for your input, I have already learned a lot from this site.

I think the best thing to do, on top of what you're already doing, is just flush and fill every single fluid on the truck with a good quality synthetic from stem-to-stern (including brakes). As for anything else, I'd say either spring for an AIS intake or go the DIY route, the E99 airboxes were especially prone to problems with poor sealing due to cracks on the ears and such.

Other than that, I'd say just be sure you add the coolant additive to protect against cavitation and keep on trucking. Oh, and don't forget about the grease fittings on the front end.

Sounds like you are on the right track (especially with regards to the John Woods trans). Curious though, is the trans having problems, or are you just replacing it as a preventative measure?

If you're going to be pulling a heavy 5th wheel, make sure to check your braking system. Also make sure your tires are up to the task of the weight they will be carrying. Post up some pics of the truck when you get to 25 posts so we can see what we're dealing with.

Thanks for the replies guys.
I am leaning towards the AIS intake since I don't want to add anymore cab noise than necessary. The current box is nice and clean with no signs of any dust getting past the filter. I do plain on replacing all the fluids with synthetic, pulling heavy makes a lot of sense to use synthetic. Good point about the grease fittings, they look like they haven't been touched in awhile. Anyone know what kind of grease is in there from the factory? I normally use synthetic grease also.

As far as the tranny, it is working fine at the moment but my trailer is right at 16,500 so I know it won't last to long pulling that weight. My old truck had an Alison so I don't want to worry about the tranny in this truck.

Are there any other rubber lines that should be replaced just based on age or just as needed for the rest?

Just for info sake, it is an E99, F350, CC, DRW, 4x4, Lariat. The engine build date is 11/98 so it just missed the cutoff. Although I have seen both 12/98 and 2/99 as cutoff dates so I am not sure which one it really is.

Thanks again,

I remember reading a post here that it is never a good time to burst a power steering line or a HPOP line so feel free to replace them anytime. Clay has the HPOP lines. I also enjoyed reading this Failure Prevention thread https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...on-thread.html . I hope for more comments from members of this forum that are much more knowledgeable & experienced than me. I like that 'Ounce of prevention worth a pound of cure' thing. Thanks for asking!

Thanks for the link, looks like a great thread that I haven't come across yet. I am heading out the door but will go through it when I get back. Just at a glance, I do have two spare CPS units in the truck. The original that was good but replaced and another new spare one.

Thanks again,

Definitely think about replacing your HPOP lines. We are getting more and more calls of people in the side of the road with a blown line. Give me a call if I can help you.

Lol I can vouch for the PS line. I had one burst on a Sunday afternoon 30 miles from home during a complete downpour, not a fun replacement at that time.

,
I use some high temp synthetic marine grease I got at the boat store, seems to work well and stay put even with wet roads and snow.

With that weight you need a trans cooler. I have the truck you are talking about build date 9-98. When I did the JW trans I had him put in 6.0L TC and new radiator with the lines that go thur it also. It will help the trans warm up in the cold. The old trans cooler won't cool that kind of weight being pulled. One other thing. I have 4.10 ls diff. and after I put on the T500 HPOP from Clay, its a termimnator pump, I got 1.9 mph better on the freeway at 78mph unloaded. You really need to up grade that pump.

Thanks again guys, I will definitely get the HPOP lines from you Clay along with my gauges that I think I will order this weekend. I too lost a power steering line on a hydro boost unit on my old Chevy. Steering and brakes gone at the same time, nice.

I didn't mention it but yes I am going to switch to the 6.0 cooler when I do the tranny. It is funny that my Alison wouldn't get above 200 pulling this trailer, normally around 180. I live in So Cal so I don't have to worry much about the cold weather except for about 2 months in the winter. It can get down to the upper 20's to low 30's but I won't be driving all that much in those temps.

Regarding the HPOP, how does the T500 help with stock injectors? Does it just provide more pressure? I to have the 4.10 LS diff.

Yes on the stock injectors. I have stock injectors also for now. I think the pressure just lets it burn better. All the 2000 year up have a 17 pump and ours have a 15 so there was a reason. This is just for down the road but it was one of the best things I did. I also think running the lines thur the radiator just warms up the fuild much better in the morning. You will find out how cool this cooler lets our trans work. I to am in southern, CA. Norco

Okay I am placing my order for both HPOP lines and HPOP related O rings along with a new water pump. I guess it is cheap insurance compared to having my truck and trailer towed home from in the middle of the desert.

Thanks Clay, let me know if I missed anything on my order that I will need.

On a side note, I have read a lot about people going with the 203* thermostat but you selling the 180. Do you personally not recommend the 203 and think going cooler than stock is better?

Thanks again,

P.S. Here is what I am ordering.

HPOP Quick Disconnect Hose Removal Tool
HPOP Line - Driver Side Head
HPOP Line - Passenger Side Head Early 99
Oil Rail Plug O-ring Kit
OEM Powerstroke Water Pump
Pressure Port/ HPOP Reservoir Fill Plug
HPOP o-ring kit w/ 7 o-rings
IPR Re-Seal kit

If you don't know your oil temp currently I would recommend the stock Motorcraft at 194ºF.
