Now I know that P-metric tires can't handle the loads the SD is capable of but my question is, since my truck is 2wd could I get away with putting P-metrics on the front and LT- E ranges on the back. I plan to put some A/T tires on the back and less agressive M/S tires on the front. I know that rotation will not be an option that way but I don't haul heavy loads very often and don't plan to put more than 10K a year on the truck. I know some of the P-metrics have an "extra load" rating because that is what I had on my Expy prior to getting this truck. Thanks in advance. Dan
I think that would be a really bad idea. But beyond my opinion, you would need to do the math. How much does your front axle weigh with that diesel engine? How much are those passenger tires rated to carry? If two passenger tires have enough capacity to handle the weight, then you still will have to wonder about the handling, and since I've never done anything this dumb, I can't say what you'll get.
I tried mixing tires with differing tire wall "stiffness" F and R on other vehicles and it affected handling WAY more than I could have ever predicted. It was downright scary. Could barely keep car in the lane.
I would be hesitant to even mix D's in front and E's in rear, unless I KNEW the tires had the exact same number of sidewall plies. (Not rating, actual plies). Some D's use the same construction as E's. Some D's use fewer plies.
I figured this was the answer I was going to get but that is why you ask...to learn. Thanks for the input guys. The prices are not that much higher for LT's I was thinking more of a ride standpoint but I don't want a poor handling truck. Again thanks.
