My Cowl Intake

Here is what i did. instead of paying $100 for the hypermax unit i decided to make my own. it cost me less than $15. can't argue with that. i think i still have some fine tuning but i am happy with the way it turned out.
One question: is there a type of tape that you guys would recomend to take the place of the clear shrinkwrap in the pics?

4" ductwork coupler. it came with 2 hose clamps. lowes, $4.

Drilled 4" hole in firewall thanks to a brand new hole saw. cut like butter. lowes, $25.

I cut and bent some alluminum that i had to kind of form to the firewall.

Got a downspout adapter from lowes. has a sqaure end that i put on the firewall. it actually fit good and clamped good as well. lowes, $8.

I used the factory flexible elbow. not the best fit, but....

The truck definatly sounds more agressive under acceleration. seems like the more i drive it the more the turbo whistles;Sweet:dunno. once i get above 2,000rpm you can really hear the turbo. throttle response was noticably increased. seems to get up to speed a little quicker and easier as well.

i don't know about any increase in boost since i don't have my boost gauge hooked up. no idea on EGT's, no gauge for that yet.

overall i am more than happy with what i came uup with and the results.

Nicely done, did u ever have gauges installed? Might be hard to compare actual numbers if not...sounds like it helped out quite a bit! So that's good! What else do u have to fine tune?

i have a boost/vac gauge. i had it as a boost gauge, but last week i switched it over to vac. i figured vac was a little more important right now since i was only getting 6 psi boost WOT.

I am going to get another one of the glavinzed couplers and put in place of the shrinkwrap and then i might caulk or put some of that spray foam insulation around the tan alluminum and firewall.

Looks good. One trick that might make it easier... I've seen HVAC guys do it. Where you go through the firewall just cut slits in the 4" coupler just like you did in the collar you put around it. Bend every other one back, stick it through the hole in the firewall, then bend the other tabs over to lock it in place. You'd probably still need some screws.

thats a good idea.

supprisingly though it is quite sturdy in its current configuration. i have half of the silver coupler sticking into the cowl right now. i will probly take it back off and cut the half off or try to do as you say. that might help seal it up some.

I dont mean to ask a stupid question... but how is this better than stock? Mine gets its air from a hole in the core support, which imo is higher pressure than the cowl, and much less chance of rain / snow infiltration. I have the factory plastic molded piece and plastic flex tube, seems more reliable than dryer ducting and cellophane.

The best way to improve it, would be to make some sort of cold air intake, either short ram or long, but getting the filter itself off of the top of the engine would make the most improvement.

I was wondering the same thing.. is there positive or neg pressure in the cowl at 55mph? I'd think you'd get a venturi effect and a little negative pressure.

from what i have learned there is a low pressure zone at the cowl/windshield intersection. i guess this forces the air into the cowl.

as far as water getting into the intake......there are two drains on the bottom of the cowl behind the fenders. hope that makes sense. if those are cleaned out then water will not be a problem. if it is really raining or snowing i can allways take the tube off and just run off the air box in the engine bay.

It is high pressure, as the air is being pushed on by the motion of the vehicle through the air. Think of the old muscle cars with cowl induction, the idea is the same. I have mine reworked to draw through the grille. The factory tub is too small and restrictive, and is even blocked out behind the grille, it has no direct pressure to it.

If someone wants to save the trouble, I have the Hypermax piece that attaches to the firewall. Came on a parts truck.

what do you have for air filter? i have the hypermax cowl kit and only time i hear the turbo is when i let out the throttle fast i can hear is slow down and slightly hear whistle at ~12psi. just curious if you have the foam prefilter maybe that absorbs the whistle?
