I've noticed that most everyone that has dont this has an auto trans... What about us manual guys? I don't see much room where i could do something like this...
not sure why, but the clutch mc does make it harder and cramped for space. if you are really handy with a welder you could copy h-max's design and fab one up and put it over the brake booster.
i am still trying to come up with a different tube from the firewall to the air box. i think i want to go with a rubber 45* boot off the firewall. then a 90* boot off of the air box, then a piece of straight 4" steel tubing in between. that set-up will look much better than what i have now.
anybody know where i can get some rubber or silicone intake boots that won't require me to take out a loan?
i did not get a vid this morning. i will try to get one tonight on the way home and post tomorrow. i could hear the turbo whistle over the radio this morning.
i got even luckier on the way home. i was accelerating past anothe car and i was over 2Krpm and radio on, windows up, it sounded like a jet went past me for a split second.. no idea why but the whistle seems to be coming on sooner and it is getting louder.
i got a couple vids today. thanks to the super duper excelent video quality on my cell phone it sounds like i have a straight piped n/a engine. the noise difference is really not even noticable any more. i will post the vids tomorrow though.
so im still at a lost as to why i cant really hear my turbo even after removing the foam pre air filter. could it be that i used the hypermax cowl hose and attached that to the stock air box hose? just the extra length loosing the sound?
I pulled mine off a while back. Got tired of blowing dirt out of it with compressed air all the time, haven't noticed any difference.
You will when you start collecting all the dirt that you were blowing out on the A/F. The foam is meant to catch the larger particles so they don't get to the filter itself.
Here is what i did. instead of paying $100 for the hypermax unit i decided to make my own. it cost me less than $15. can't argue with that. i think i still have some fine tuning but i am happy with the way it turned out.
One question: is there a type of tape that you guys would recomend to take the place of the clear shrinkwrap in the pics?
4" ductwork coupler. it came with 2 hose clamps. lowes, $4.
Drilled 4" hole in firewall thanks to a brand new hole saw. cut like butter. lowes, $25.
I cut and bent some alluminum that i had to kind of form to the firewall.
Got a downspout adapter from lowes. has a sqaure end that i put on the firewall. it actually fit good and clamped good as well. lowes, $8.
I used the factory flexible elbow. not the best fit, but....
The truck definatly sounds more agressive under acceleration. seems like the more i drive it the more the turbo whistles;Sweet:dunno. once i get above 2,000rpm you can really hear the turbo. throttle response was noticably increased. seems to get up to speed a little quicker and easier as well.
i don't know about any increase in boost since i don't have my boost gauge hooked up. no idea on EGT's, no gauge for that yet.
overall i am more than happy with what i came uup with and the results.
Just so you know, I'm completely and utterly ripping your setup off in the next week or so.
My question is this, would I see any benefit of wrapping the air intake tubing with some sort of heat resistant wrapping, as it gets quite warm under the hood (I often see rain evaporating off the hood), and wouldn't that nullify some of the benefit from a cold air intake if the hose material it's going through gets heated up?
Spent like the last 5 minutes trying to find a recent photo of my intake setup as it is, and then face palmed realizing I could just walk outside and take a new one...
This is my current setup, not the best. But it hasn't been actively hot up here for a few years so I didn't lose any sleep over it, but I don't imagine I'm doing myself any favors as it sits currently.
