You have to press the button to go to any gear from "Drive" so whats the difference in having one on "park" also. You dont need to button when going from "R to N, N to D, 3-2-1 or 1-2-3-D.
I would rather have the safety feature then have my truck accidently thrown into Reverse or park at 60mph on the highway. Its the same with the column shift when you pull the lever, still a safety release. Although I wish it had a gated shifter, I do like the way the newer dodges look with the center shifter. It time to go from inline to gated like everything else. But that wont keep me from buying another ford at all. Just a minor detail that could use an update.
You are still complaining about a safety feature and using an offroad racer as a comparison
Nope. Try pushing a column shifter straight up from drive. It goes to neutral, and you have to pull back to select any other gear. Push forward on a gated console shifted from drive and it goes into neutral and you have to move it to the side to select another gear. Inline console shifters are the only ones that require you to deactivate the safety feature in order to get to neutral, allowing the possibility of accessing another gear. Not a big deal if stopped, but moving could present some problems.
I only mentioned the race vehicles because their shifters are designed to nearly eliminate selecting the wrong gear, both by safety sanctioning and by design of use in high stress situations.
but for the life of me if you want to go to park why shouldn't the shifter GO THERE "ALL THE WAY" without detents for NEUTRAL and REVERSE?
Somebody is going to get hurt.
Flame away.
I see detents for neutral and reverse in the pics you posted, but I also see what you are saying. You can "hold" the shifter all the way to one side and avoid the detents as you push the lever all the way forward into park. Just the same as you can "hold" the release button and push the shifter all the way forward until it goes into park.
Maybe try moving your seat forward some so that you make sure that you get the shifter all the way to park at arms length?
