I have a 2006 350 SD with the Torqshift Automatic. I picked it up a few weeks ago and discovered they had overfilled the transmission. Subsequently it leaked out the vent on top of the transmission and the dip tube. You had mentioned how the fluid increases greatly in volume as it is heated. I drained the fluid just from the plug and took out a little over 9 quarts (not including the fluid spilled on the ride home), so probably closer to 10 quarts. I put back in 7 quarts and it seems to be correct on the stick, (after a 20 mile drive), and it is not weeping out the vent. My question is, that its seems like a very fine line between the proper fill level, and having fluid come out the vent. Is this true and can you explain? Also was this transmission damaged in any way? It shifts perfectly. Thanks
There is a fairly fine line between full and overfull. If it gets too high the rotating parts will whip the ATF into foam. Foamed fluid will GREATLY expand in volume and come out of the vent and dipstick tube. Heating the fluid will expand it, but not a lot.
