Im having trouble getting fluid reading on my dipstick that im confident in. I believe the dipstick is rubbing against the fill tube and picking up residual fluid giving me false readings.
I dropped the pan change internal and external filter, im now refilled with 7 quarts, but not seeing any distinct level on the dipstick, just kinda smeared all over it.
The fluid drips off the dipstick tube onto the dipstick after filling. You'll have to wait 10+ minutes to get an accurate reading. Also check both sides of the dipstick.

Any thoughts?
Mine took 9 qt's last time I did this exact same change.

agreed.
I always have to wait between adding and checking the fluid. I usually add and leave the dipstick out until I start the truck. takes forever for the fluid to clear the tube.
Ok im 9 qts in and the level is just above the C on the dipstick. Tranny temp was reading 140* on my gauge. The only thing i can think of is that my tranny was low on fluid before i dropped the pan!. Thoughts?
Anyone know how to reliably read the ENGINE OIL dipstick???
Same problem.... the routing of the tube means that little grey blob on the end is covered in oil whenever I try to check it.
I would have preferred a standard metal dipstick; even checked with Navistar, but none of their applications have the same length tube...

I always read mine cold and both sides, but it's never been a problem for me personally. It also helps if your oil is doing it's job and it's black--LOL.

8.5 quarts for mine, measured although the previous owner may have been low. 7.5 quarts for a drain and fill, so you are 1 quart low in my opinion OP. Drive it around for 20 minutes. Find level ground...Go thru all the gears waiting 3 seconds between shifts...Put it in Park, then R, N, 3, 2, 1 and back to Neutral set the parking brake. Pull the dipstick and it should be 3/4 of the way up the HOT mark on dipstick. CHECK IT IN NEUTRAL!
Adjust as needed. After a full pan drop and 2 more drain and fills, Mine was on the lowest line on HOT, so I added 1/2 qt and it brought me back into the middle. (Doing the HOT check above)
