thank you! 1 more thing i found odd. on the alternator is the little ground stud not supposed to have anything connected to it? there is a black wire going to the positive on the alternator. is this weird? and there are 2 wires with female connections going onto he male ends.

The alternator charge wire should have a fuseable link. Check to see that it is not burned out.

Where did you get the regulator, most of the cheap ones are crap out of the box. Get a voltmeter and see what your putting out with everything hooked up. You should have at least over 13volts 14.4 is ideal. Try running a ground wire to the alt and see if that helps, mine does have a ground. Oh and the screw that holds the regulator down SHOULD have a ground wire on it because the reg needs to be grounded, but due to the plastic inner fender it needs the wire.

Test your running voltage, just right on the battery posts is fine, you can also check voltage at the glowplug selonoid. If its at 13 volts or more you may just have poor batteries.

12.17 indicates you are not putting out anything on your alternator. Should be at least 13 volts, hopefully close to 14-14.5 volts. A cheap alternator test is to put the end of a screwdriver at the back of the alt at the center bearing. It should have a slight magnetic pull on the screw driver end.

It sounds as if your regulaotr is not working, did you put the ground wire from regulator to chassis?

Sound like you still have a problem, maybe diodes in the alt, which could drain the batts while sitting.
