I have a recently purchased 1979 Ford F-250 Custom. I want to install new gaskets on the differentials. It appears the rear one is a Ford 10.25" would the front be a Dana 60?? I can not find a tag on it yet.
There "should" be, but by now the tag is prolly long gone thanks to rust. If you take a wire brush to the front side of the axle you may be able to see some numbers. Unless someone swapped in a Sterling, your rear axle should be a Dana 60. Like JB said, check the bolts. That's the easiest way

Sterling 10.25" introduced in 1985.
Rear axle is a Dana 60, front could be a Dana 44 or a 60.
Dana axles: The Ford axle ID tag was under one of the bolts that retain the inspection cover to the housing.
Many are missing today, because peeps neglected to re-install them when re-installing the cover.
Dana 60: The Dana 2" x 1/2" ID tag is bolted to the housing (two bolts), adjacent to the inspection cover. Has a 7 or 8 digit Dana ID number stamped on it (examples: 603010-1 / 603010-11).
The AXLE code is stamped on the Warranty Plate, but usually it only refers to the rear axle. The 3rd digit, if present refers to the front...but if a J = Power Steering.
Most AXLE codes have no front driving info contained within (ratio/type of axle).
