I have a 2002 F350 with a 7.3. The other day when changing the oil I pulled the dip stick and the top came off the actualy stick portion. I tried to fish it out of the tube but only pushed in in further.
Crawling underneath the truck, I noticed the tube enters the oil pan through a threaded mount. Can I simply unthread this mount, remove the tube and fish out the dip stick?
If you loosen that big nut on the dipstick tube flange the flange can fall into the oil pan. Best solution is to remove the tube from the flange. It just pulls out of the flange and has an o-ring seal. Remove the nut that holds the tube bracket at the valve cover studded bolt and pull the tube up and out. Make sure you hold the bracket tight when loosening that nut. Also have the specially formed dipstick tube o-ring to re-install the tube.
Mine was broke off when I bought it. I was able to dig a knife into it at the top and wedge it up out and grab the rest with pliers... If you pushed it in more, this might not help you though...
Before it broke were you having problems pushing the dipstick back in? If so that is normaly due to the dipstick tube bracket being bent.
Where it goes into the pan or...? Mine goes in but stops short about 5" from the bottom... I was wondering if the tube was bent but didn't appear to be...

Push the top of the dipstick tube back toward the firewall about an inch and see if that helps.
Edit : What gets bent is the bracket that holds the top of the tube.

You are the man of the hour!! Reps sent good buddy! Dipstick is back in place although it still has no handle, at least I can check the oil level now. At least get an idea. Thanks again!
