That sounds like a load of CHIT to me. He should of said something upfront BEFORE you bought the truck.
I was thinking the same thing. I would blow a gasket if I ever found out that the truck I bought has 2 different VIN # with 2 different year body and frame without telling me at all.
However, all isn't lost. Assuming the VIN doesn't come back as stolen (it might) then what you can do is take a bill of sale down to the DMV and plead your case. Tell them the previous owner didn't have a title. On an older vehicle like this they aren't worried about there being a lien on the truck like they would with a newer vehicle. Most of the time they will give you a title with your name on it and the correct VIN.
Got any pics of the frame horns? if they have the crumple zone like this pic, it is a 92-96 frame. If not then it is a 80-91 frame

This is just me thinking out loud, take it for what it is but...... The front end on that one is newer than '92. '92 IIRC still had the box nose. Everyone here gave sound advice and I would take it. Look EVERYWHERE for whatever you can find even close to a vin then write them down, go to the DMV and tell them the original cab was damaged and it has a replacement now. (Use the year model vin that the truck is supposed to be. 10th character for '90 should be "L" and '92 should be "N".) You're basically filing for a new title. I've done it before, Kind of like filing for lost but simply "re-registering" it again. If they ask why just make something up. That way, it has one vin and the correct year on the title so IF you were to sell it again, everything would lineup. Not to mention all legalities would be in order. Sounds like you bought this truck from the same guy who sold my ex-wife hers.... Left turn signal had both reverse lights blinking and stop lights lit the reverse lights among other problems.....And no, I wasn't with her when she bought it.
