VIN on frame?

the title was junked by mistake. A local junkyard got a 76' F250 in that had one of my old doors that I had thrown out. I am blind and did not know the vin was on the drivers door from the factory. What the hell was Ford thinking? Anyway I have to go to CHP to have the VIN taken from the frame, before DMV will give my smog exempt title back.
