I was tired of the whining oem p/s unit, even though mine was newly rebuilt (A.Zone). In parking lots it didn't seem to give enough power as my steering faded when hard worked. When I did my hydroboost install I was told to go with a Saginaw pump for more power, and found one made to bolt right up to the oem bracket. But it doesn't supply enough power, and I'd like to do away with the 'wing' look of the monstrous oem bracket that sticks out like 18" from the block. I've noticed that econoline vans came with the 'canned ham' type Sag. pumps that everyone wants and raves about. So I pulled one of the brackets that can work with or w/o air. The trick, I see, depends on which groove on the dampener you want to use for the p/s belt; if you are not using air, and need to use the third groove, the one farthest from the block (I use the two closest the block for dual belt 130 amp alt pulley), then you need to order the Sag. pump for a 77 econoline w/o air. If you want to use the groove closest the block, then order the pump for an eighties Econoline with a 300, with a/c. The diff. is in the length of the pump snout. The bracket too is an improvement as it sits much tighter to the block. Ford pumps are notorious for whining!
A bit greasy, but nothing a solvent bath won't help. They seem to be pretty rare at the j/y too. In the coming years our parts are going to get harder to find, and more costly, as the supply of used items shrinks.
In this photo you can see how the oem bracket, circa 1978, hangs way out to the side, creating what I call my 'p/s wing'.
I see your pump has the long snout so you can utilize the outside grove on the v.dampener. Do you remember what year that pump was for? a/c or w/o a/c?
I'm thinking of searching for the old 70's 'canned ham' reservoir with dual return lines. It should work on any of the Sag. models. That way I won't have to use a T in my lines.
I think I just got a pump for an '86 E150 with a/c (my Bronco is an '86 with A/C). It has a three groove balancer and the p/s pump runs in the middle groove - A/C in front and alternator closest to the block.
