I finally got around to installing the GT40 heads I had rebuilt on my 71 302, along with Edelbrock 600 & Jeg's 331 high flow intake. It started right up however, upon second try of starting the starter teeth stripped; I only had that starter three months and it never slipped or grinded. I wouldn't think the torque would be that big of a difference. I got a high torque mini starter which I was going to get later when I put headers on. The engine seem louder than before but it runs good.
Jaye, great information for me to keep in mind. I wonder if I should change mine out before I even install the motor. I will be running a 5.0 HO with edelbrock performer upper and lower intake and GT40 heads.
I have GT-40 heads and a stock style rebuilt starter from O'Reilly's which I'm able to use with the BBK Mustang shorty headers (no mini starter needed). It cranks it over without any issues.
If you get the high torque mini-starter remember to take the OEM starter relay out of the circuit. All of these mini-starters that I have seen have integral solenoids built in. If you leave the firewall-mounted OEM starter relay in the circuit the bendix will not disengage immediately after the engine starts and it will cause grinding of the gears.
Charlie I did bypass the OEM solenoid as per the instructions however I did have to search their website for which wire goes where. Carnut122 the starter I brought a few months ago was a reman from O'reily's, ther aren't to many header that will work with the straight axle & Toyota box therefore the ones you used may not fit my truck. The ones I;m going to use require a smaller starter.
