which starter to get?

My '78 F250 has a 1984 351W in it, but I have no idea what vehicle the engine was originally installed. If I wanted to replace the starter, what would I use as my reference? Truck is a manual (NP435). Should I just pull the starter and take it to auto parts store? Would a mini-starter be a better option? Truck has headers, a hotter cam, and GT40 heads.

Thanks
Frank

Any sb Windsor starter should fit it. I put a 1969 351w in my 86 mustang and the 5.0 starter works just fine. My personal preference would be a Napa starter. They have a lifetime warranty and it doesn't matter if you have the receipt or if you were even the one that bought the part.

Thanks! Is there a difference between starters for a manual vs. auto?
