They are desgined for higher compression engines (like a hot-rodded one) so you can start a hot motor easily over a stock one. Most stock ones wouldn't start until it has cooled down some...this solves that.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 14-Sep-02 AT 08:15 AM (EST)]I would have to look at the starter to be sure but you can mess with the torque output of an electric motor by messing with the windings and such or you can have a reduction gear built into the starter. I've been thinking about the reduction gear starter for my truck because starter motor is smaller motor and would stay further away from the headers and therefore be less effected by the heat from the headers. I have my timing advanced far enough that when the engine is hot it will buck the starter but it does manage to start the engine. They don't come cheap though.

If you have a built motor with lots of torque you might have to have one. If you starter works fine I would'nt spend the money. I know someone who has a built 302 in a mustang and has to push start(the motor eats up stock starters) because he is to cheap to go buy a racing starter!
I decided to put a PowerMaster from Summit on my 400 and it really works great---no looking back---they run 195---I didn't think that was that high, personally..........fd
ford used a gear reduction high torque starter on their later efi 460's. im not positive on the year they began using them, i read about this somewhere on this board....ive been looking into this myself
i think all the later model trucks have a high torque mini starter, they sure sound like it when they start, my 95 cougar 3.8 has a high torque mini starter, the motor itself is no bigger than a beer can same for big blocks amazing what you can do with a few little gears, only sux when you replace it cuz like everyone said its more than twice the price, on hi po motors when cranking with all that comprsssion the nosecone where the shaft and front bushing are will actually explode or crack away, then you need a mini starter
