John has an E350 van. Are the starters in that chassis different to get to verses the trucks?
Thank you for noticing the van and possible difference Ponyboy. I don't think that there is any way I could have used a 4 foot extension to get to that top bolt but I will check the next time I am under there. I did get the top bolt off (and didn't need to use any "french" - but it was a helpful suggestion). I used a 3/8 swivel and a 3" extension when I put it back on I'll use a 4" or 6" extension - not sure that there is room for the 6".
I won't be using red lock-tight. Red lock-tight is for permanent usage, blue is somewhat removable but there didn't seem to be any problem with the bolts being loose. As a machinist I know that generally if the bolt and threaded hole are good and the bolt/screw is tightened to the proper torque range then it should hold (actually they are screws that hold our starters on - mine happens to have two hex head screws and a stud with a nut). Problems arise when we over tighten or use poor quality, damaged or dirty screws. Then we can get problems like, the treads can stretch and lose their holding power.
