Has anyone had this problem? Last weekend I replaced the front caliper on the driver side because it was frozen up and I could barely spin the tire when jacked up. Once the old caliper was removed the hub spun freely. After a couple of days on the new caliper the truck started pulling to the drivers side again...what gives??
I'm not certain that its the caliper again, but I'm going to jack it up again this weekend to see if I missed something last time. Any ideas?
Also, I noticed the dust boots or seals where the hubbs go into the axle are just hanging freely on the shaft. Has anyone else noticed this? I spoke with a mechanic and he said that if it is covered by warranty then to have them both replaced, but if not he wouldn't worry about it. Thoughts?
Are the slide pins that the caliper bolts too stuck? If they are, it is your problem. Living where u are, I would take a good look at them. They should slide in and out with very little effort.
Those seals are common to fall out. Will not hurt anything but if they are under warranty, it does not hurt to get it fixed free.
I also agree that the seals that Ford uses always seem to fall out and there seems to be no real issues with it. Both of my previous Excursions and my current pickup have the same seal issues with no issues.
With the original caliper "locking up", did you replace it with a semi-loaded caliper; i.e. everything new minus the pads? If not, I would definitely clean up the guide pins and regrease. Also, may want to check the rotor to see if the heat caused by the lockup warped it.
I did replace only the caliper and re-used the brake pads. I also checked out the rotor and could not tell that it was warped due to overheating.
No, the slide pins were not stuck.
I am going to make a call to my dealership and ask if the seals are covered under warranty and also ask about the brake issue...maybe they will have something helpful to say. I haven't had much luck with them in the past...
I wouldn't worry about the dust seals mine are also hanging when i took it to the dealer they said it was nothing to worry about unless you do a lot of driving on dirt roads or gravel roads. but wouldn't hurt if its covered under warranty. I just keep it greased up so no dirt can get in.
I would try cracking the bleed valve while it is dragging to see if something in the propotioning valve or line is acting as a check valve and not allowing the fluid to flow back away from the caliper. Its a long shot, but it will eliminate all componants before the caliper.
It may also be possible to have debris inside the caliper from degrading rubber hoses. Also a long shot, but it has happened before. If all other componants are ok then IDK what else to say. Lastly, you may have got a bum rebuild... A friday afternoon job...
New pads....whenever you replace the caliper it is good idea to do the pads as well. If you look at the old pads...are they worn funny or evenly? Sometimes that can be a tell tale sign of what the issue is.
You could have also gotten a bad "new" caliper that sticks.
I have an appointment for the 15th. I spoke with the service manager and he said both issues should be covered under my Premium Plan Hopefully we will have a definitive answer when it's completed.
