Scan gauge, AE software or other?

Scan gauge, AE software or other?
I am absolutely enjoying my truck but the thought of not being able to trouble shoot it is a concern. My worst fear was realized today when the engine bucked and then ran with almost no power but now seems to be running fine. I hate going to the dealership.
The AE seems advanced and upgradable but I'd have to keep a laptop around, charged and the version of Windows current. My truck isn't getting any computer upgrades so why should I have to keep my diagnostic tool upgraded?
Don't know much about the Scan Tool so I don't know where to find out more about it and possibly purchase it.
Are there other options too?

I'll call Clay when/if I get out of jury duty this morning. I'm wondering if the Scan Guage will give pressure readings like the HPOP and the transmission.

Here is a link to the user manual for version 2.7 software, which you will need as it is not supplied with a scan gauge. OBS trucks use the Ford platform #2 parameter set.

Here is a overview what does work on OBS trucks ...
Platform 2 parameters:
1. INTAKE AIR 2- Intake Air Temperature
2. RPM 2- engine Revolutions Per Minute
3. Manifold PSI 2 – Manifold Air Pressure (psia) for frequency based MAP
sensors
4. BOOST 2 – Boost Pressure in psig for frequency based MAP
5. MILES PER HOUR 2- Miles Per Hour
6. TRANS TEMP 2 – Trans temp derived from the trans temp sensor
voltage for 1997 and older trucks.
7. TRANS VOLTS – Transmission temperature sensor raw voltage.
8. RUN TIME MINS- engine run time since last engine start. Can be used
as a trip timer.
9. BATTERY VOLTAGE- Alternator/battery output voltage
10. PULSE WIDTH- injector pulse width in msec
11. ENGINE OIL TEMP
12. EX. BACK PRESS – Exhaust back pressure
13. ICP DC – Injector Control Pressure Duty Cycle
14. ICP – Injector Control Pressure
15. CURRENT GEAR – Current Transmission Gear

I have it and I like it, I still dont know who to put all the amennities (spl?) on it, but till I know it has warning ligths too.
