C6 Third and Reverse.
I recently bought a 1986 F-250 4x4 6.9L IH
The guy said the tranny leaked a little. I looked under it and found that the tranny cooling lines were leaking and the pan was leaking. I tightened the lines and replaced the filter and pan gasket.
While in there I noticed that the fluid was pretty dark and has a slight burnt smell to it.
I have checked vacuum and it seems well, shifts into reverse and drive just fine but slips in reverse and third and does not seem to shift down at lights until I give it some power.
I think I have found the answer but I want a second opinion from ya'll here.
Thanks in advance, if you have questions or need more input please ask and I will reply with any info you may need to help me solve this problem.

If this does not work I guess I will get my hands dirty and rebuild my first automatic transmission. I have done several engines but never a tranny. I have also looked on craigs and found a c6 from a 429 locally for $150.00. I may check on that and rebuild the one that I have in the truck for an extra if the 420 IH engine and 429 gas engines have the same bolt pattern.
I noticed a lot of sludge in the pan too. It didn't seem to be metal and no big parts where present. I assumed it was from the leak in the cooler line maybe sucking in dirt. Could the valve body be a culprit? Just grasping at straws... I think when I pull the pan again I will pull the valve body and make sure it is all clean too.

As for the 429 trans, pretty sure it would be a waste of time. The diesel has a unique bellhousing pattern.
Fresh fluid *may* extend the life of the trans for a while, but it's about due for a rebuild. The C6 is rather stout, but even they cannot function correctly with the clutches stripped of the friction material.......
Having said all that, IF it works you are just buying time. RW is right that the clutch/band material was the sludge, and at some point they will have to be replaced. A lot depends on how you are going to use it and for how long. But, changing the fluid doesn't cost much and will clean it up internally so rebuilding takes less cleanup.
