Does the ford additive claim to demuslify? I cannot remember ever reading that an addative would do this? just looking for info, dealer is picking up my new truck out of state for me at a very reasonable price and I told him i wanted the ford additive put in the tank from the first fill up ( and bring me the empty bottle)
Not sure you should ask him to dump the entire bottle in there. A small bottle is rated to treat 125 gallons! I'd ask him to use it as directed and bring you the mostly full bottle back.
I have yet to see anything solid that proves that PM-22 is a demulsifier, but the majority of the common brands do mention this, so it would stand to reason that it does. Pretty confident that it's not an emulsifier though!
Smoke, I believe you are expecting too much from your additive. The only thing an additive is going to do to water that will prevent it from showing up in your fuel/water separator is to emulsify it. This is BAD juju and can destroy your truck.
If you have water in your fuel there is only one good place for it to go, which is your DFCM which would eventually set your WIF light.
The lack of water in the DFCM means one of two things. 1: You aren't getting contaminated fuel or; 2: the water is getting emulsified. A good additive would demulsify water and leave it harmlessly in your DFCM.
So if your additive is responsible for your lack of water in the DFCM this is not a good thing!
I guess ...I expect to much from this product........
Improved Storage Stability
(More than doubles storage life of diesel fuel)
Improved Water Separation
Improved Cold Weather Performance
Compatible with all vehicle emissions systems
Let me also state.....I buy all my fuel from one Nation wide supplier.....My major worry is "water in the fuel" I try to do my best in making sure that does not happen....but the other benefits that this product includes helps....more than the Ford product I was using.....

Doesn't look like it. "Enhanced water separation" likely means that it contains a demulsifier that would assist your DFCM in doing it's job. Meaning that if you had water in your fuel it should come out when you drain it, and it would also set off the WIF light.
If you have water in there, and the WIF light comes on that means that your additive is helping protect your engine. This is a GOOD thing in the event you get bad fuel!
Motorcraft PM-22 is made for Ford by a company called Chemtech and the ingredients are, hydrotreated light petroleum distillate, 2-ethylhexyl nitrate, 2 ethylhexanol, 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene, trimethylbenzene, naphtha heavy aromatic, naphthalene.
I think direct from Opti-lube is about as cheap as anywhere else. There don't seem to be a lot of distributors listed online for this product. I found one, but their price was the same. (for the five gallon pail at least). I have been using Stanadyne sice I still had about 2 gallons left in the pail I bought last year, (I ran it in my '08 every tankful) So I have about 3 1/2 months worth of History, and MPG. umder my belt in the new '11, I have the opti-lube 5 gal pail on order so when I switch, I'll be sure to compare results. The only downside is the cold weather aspect now, that I didn't have when I originally bought the truck, so I don't know that I'll see a noticeable difference in milage or anything. I hope it smells better than the stanadyne, lol man that stuff stinks up my garage every time I refill my little bottles that I keep in the truck

Does it do anything besides reducing wear & friction?
These are multi-functional additives, each product improves water separation (a demulsifier), prevent corrosion, improve storage life and clean injectors.
The XPD and Winter products boost cetane and contain anti-gel additives. Each product has been found to improve fuel economy in most cases.
Another bit of info I might add is if you look at the Opti-lube XPD MSDS sheet it is very similar in chemical compisition's to the ones I mentioned above which I got off a label of a 1 gal. can of PM-22
Great discussion...I use the PM22A...buy it by the gallon...but...the question remains; why do we have to use any of them at all? If Ford had provided a HPF system that reflected the real world fuel quality issues owners face out there every day...this conversation would not have to take place...just sayin...

You can also turn the question around and ask, why doesn't the refinery companies turn out a product that is more suitable for our needs. European diesel owners have a better fuel available to them then we do. It's a fact that a diesel fuel that's rated 50+ cetane rating burns cleaner then one that's 42 cetane. You need these higher numbers more then ever in colder weather.
