I wouldn't but that's just me. I would use Mercron SP if I could find it. But everything around here sales LV now instead of SP.

No, it isn't safe to use Mobil 1 synthetic ATF in your transmission. That has a MERCON V rating and your transmission requires MERCON SP or MERCON LV. Anything else will cause expen$ive damage.

Some posters are using Valvoline maxlife and others are using Royal Purple, but I think you will find that Mercon LV is the least expensive. You can mix LV and SP.

Ford's stuff myself. Now my rebuilt tranny does allow for the cheaper stuff to be run, but that just isn't me when I know that their ATF is pretty good stuff.

I don't own a transmission that uses MERCON SP or LV. Valvoline MaxLife is rated for MERCON SP so I would use it.

I've had a Suncoast kit in since about 65K that allows for Mercon or Mercon V but I've always used SP and now LV in mine since then with some SERIOUS abuse. Still going at 175K.

I've had my kit put in a little bit later mileage wise then yours, but I have over 200k and it still runs like a top. I wouldn't put the cheaper stuff in there. It's not worth it in my opinion.

thanks guys, how much did you pay per quart of mercon LV in your local areas? and how many quarts did you need to fill back up, is it possible to drain the torque converter on the 5r100?

and is ford the only place to get the mercon lv?

You need to get a heated flush as the TC doesn't have a drain. however, you can just drain the pan and do about 8 quarts at a time, just do more often. You should also be changing the filter on the lines up by the rad.
