My 53 has the stock recirculating system. It has never blown very hard. Is there a cheap way to update to get it to blow harder? i.e. different motor squirl cage?
Mid Fifties has a nice replacement 12V 2 speed. If you're still on 6V they may have one I don't know. Their replacement works nice in my 56. Might also check the ground.
Is it the box type with FORD block letters on the front? Are you 6 or 12 volt. I might be able to help with this one. I have worked on a ton of these heaters.
If you're running 12v, i can recommend the motor i put into my '56. Got it through Napa for around $40. Only takes a monior modification to the squirel cage (shaft was larger had to drill out the squirrel cage) but it blows like crazy! I assume the heaters are the same from '53-'56?? (physically anyways..)
There are actually 4 different heaters from 53-56. There was the box style with the four letters, There was the the type with the straight plenum with a visible core and two controls similar to the 56s, then there was the deluxe model with 4 cables and the 56 model that has a curve in the plenum and two controls

Mine is not the one that has the ford block letters. It has a tube that attaches to the side vent on the side of the cab. My truck has been switched to 12v.
Sure thing. Got it over the counter, I believe it was Napa. VDO# PM 322
The catch is you must drill out your squirrel cage to 5/16 (I believe... whatever matched the shaft of the motor) I could not seem to locate a suitable replacement 2 speed with a 1/4" shaft as stock. Although some places offered a replacement motor I couldn't see spending $100 or more on one! This one was around $30-$40. (would have to find reciept to give you exact cost) Keep in mind, this is a 12 VOLT replacement, not for 6 volt.
