I Have a 1950 F47 (F1) that I am conversing to 12 volt. Does anyone know if there is a 12 volt motor available or can I rewire mine to work on 12 volts?
You might want to try Greggs distributors in Fort Mac. I think i got one from them in Calgary a while back. Memory is a bit fuzzy. I do know that the shaft was a bit bigger so you would have to drill out the squirrel cage to accept it. , Doug
I have been running my 6v heater motors on 12v for years on multiple cars with no issues. I run a modern style resistor network so I never have full current to the motor, my high speed is through the lowest value resistor in the network. Cheap and works.
Here is my heater.....
Fortyniner: reversing motor?
Moejr: thanks for the tip, I will look into that.
Muppy1840: We do have a Gregg's. I never thought of checking with them. Thanks.
If your motor turns ok then I would use it , run it on 12v like Dave said......when I went from 6v to 12v I just used a heater switch and it worked fine. When I rebuilt the heater, I upgraded to 12v.
If you open up the heater unit to rebuild it, you'll notice the blower fan has vanes in two directions. In the forward direction, air is pushed out the front of the heater box. In reverse, the air flow is pushed through the ducts to the defroster vents.
So I have the heater out. I took it out complete with harness, switch etc. I hooked it straight up to a 12 bolt battery and it works awesome! Even the light in the switch worked! Centre location on the switch is off and then there are two speeds by rotating the switch in either direction except the fan turns reverse or forward depending on which way the switch is rotated.

If that bulb is a 6v piece it will work really nice and bright on 12v for a little while anyway
If you decide to get a 12v motor......
I have the exact heater, found a 12v new, decent 5 wire reversible motor online for $25, wired it to the original switch, and it works great.
Had to shorten the shaft, and drill the fan mounting hole a size bigger.
It is do-able
