oil question

i have a 2000 f-250 with the triton v-10. I work in a yamaha dealership and we are a dealer of AMSOIL. I decided to switch to AMSOIL from castrol gtx. The problem im having is ... when i ordered the oil i ordered 5w-30 but they sent me 5w-20. I have always ran 5w-30 in it. I would like to know if this will hurt my truck to run the lighter weighted oil. I know some of the trucks actually call for this but i'm not sure about my truck. Another little twist in the story is I bought this truck used and guy said that the original motor blew up and they put a reman in it. I do know that the truck DOES have the "PI" heads on it, so I know its not the original engine because they didnt do the power increase heads until after 2000. So .. will this oil hurt my truck. Thanks.

I think you should be ok. It was changed to 5w-20. That's what my '02 calls for.

The moderator could move this thread to the V10 forum to get you better answers.

PI heads were in 99/00 so there is no reason why you'd have a different engine. Also 5w20 is Ford's recommended weight. I'd say your best chance at doing damage would be running amsoil for whatever ludicrous mileage they claim.

5W30 was the original suggested oil for the early V10's, then it changed to 5W20. Several of us researched it and could not find ANY design changes that accompanied the change. About the only thing that changed was Ford releasing a 5W20 oil.... At a time when there were very few aftermarket 5W20 oils.

I am perfectly content running either. And in a synthetic, even more content.

Oil theory suggests that for a given brand and additive package, 5w30 may provide a bit more protection under extreme stress, and 5w20 should provide slightly better fuel economy.
Real world says a good synthetic 5w20 will provide better protection than bottom shelf 5w30, and synthetic 5w30 will provide better fuel economy than cheap 5w20. so there you go.... Don't lose sleep!

If it matters, I run Valvoline (Napa on the label) full synthetic 5W20. Napa had it on sale for $3 per bottle, 5w30 or 5w20. I went with a couple cases of 5w20 because the engine only had 6K miles on it.
Even during our 100+ degree summers and towing, my oil pressure looks fantastic, even when I dump it at 7-8K miles (my personal choice for oil change intervals).

But when this case is out, if the 5w30 is even $.10 per quart cheaper for the same oil, I would not hesitate to buy and run it instead of 5w20.

Yup. Thank you. Changes made.

Then again, I wouldn't hesitate to run 10W30 in my climate, either!
