When using the 60e as my DD tune, I did experience less smoke, I recently have been running the 80e and seems to be giving better results in mpg for my driving style. I have to "watch myself" with the extra power, but moderate acceleration gives almost smoke free results. I used the 80e last weekend for a 400 mile round trip and will have to compare it again with it in the 60e next time. I did average a little higher in the 60e on long interstate runs before.
I agree, mine shifted hard... but I have the F6 and Jody emailed the fix to me and he got it right.
As for smoke, mine will do it before the truck is really up to temp, but not after it's been on the highway.
Is everyone that feels 80e shifts too hard have the JW valve body on their transmission? Just wondering if adding the valve body will eliminate this hard shift condition people are experiencing in 80e?
I have the 80E in my 01 dually! I really like it for the giddiup it has but the harsh shifts and the high rpm till OD is not my style. I really like the stock setting shift profile with the OD coming in at 40mph. I am going to talk with Jody when I get back from Fl. in April and see if we can come up with 80E with stock shift profile. With that I believe the truck will be much more driveable. The wife will also be happy ! her neck getting sore from the jerking!!!
Jody tweaked my shifts to compliment my trans mods during live tuning. I have the TrasGo TC lock up valve in my pump and had extremely rough downshifts from OD to 3rd. He was able to adjust that out for me and I chose to leave the downshift in all my tunes. It aids in deceleration and makes my heavy truck easier to stop.
The smoke does clear up pretty quickly as seen in the video I will post at the bottom. The first "run" is from a stop with pedal almost WOT. As you can see very little thick black smoke comes up. In the video I was trying to smoke, and on the next couple poofs I was successful. The video just demonstrates how from a stop I dont smoke much in 80e.
The times when I get black smoke is when I'm in this awkward RPM range (perhaps when TC is locked) and when I press the throttle it billows black smoke until the trans shifts or something and the RPMs climb and the smoke clears up. (If a video of this would help, I'd be glad to post)

Doing that you will have smoke. Your turbo is spooled down and you are asking the truck to go pretty quickly! Anytime you get on the throttle then let off, then get back on it you will get smoke like that until the turbo catches up.
Just doing the JW valve body will make it shift harder. I didn't like that and had JW redo it to feel more stock on the shifts. I use the 60e most all the time around town. Its more of an in town friendly tune. I like the 80e but use it on the freeway mostly. MPG up and with the T500 in the e99 its great and responsive. Just add the 60e, you will use both.

I've been running my 60e Mountain for several months now, under every scenario imagionable (except towing). My wife and I have spent so many hours behind the windshield, we both know every little nuance of "Stiny's" behavior.
I just received my 80e and downloaded it into the F6 yesterday. We are both blown away. It's not a ton more power, but it's "refined". One of my many hats at work is software beta tester and I know the difference between a program in the works and a refined product. The 60e "feels" like a project that isn't completed yet. If I were to place a bet: I'd say Jody started on this, then made some discoveries that became the 80e. He then went on to develop the 80e until it is the product I have now. This shift in attention (along with all his other duties) may have caused him to abandon refining the 60e - or at least put it on a low simmer.
All that speculation aside, if my wife and I both feel the difference and it's for the better - 80e is now my favorite tool in the box. I'm on a road trip and I'm pretty sure I see a bump in economy from the 60e to the 80e, but I will confirm at fillup.
Just so you know the history.
80e was developed 8 yrs/ago. It has go be through multiple revisions based on what our customers like and dislike . Most recently it was because of the EPA.
The 60 e was developed when fuel went over 5.00 a gallon. It helps conserve on long trips. The mountain tunes are totally different from both regular economic tunes. These were developed for daily driving switch back driving. The 60 e will most likely undergo many revisions just like the 80 e did.

Wellllll..... I put my foot squarely in my mouth in that one. My sincere apologies to the great people at DP-Tuner... I'd be in the tall grass if it weren't for you.
To be clear on my sentiments on the two tunes: My 60e is very close to just the way I like it with just a little more tweaking. The 80e is absolute poetry in my particular truck. I believe I see a 5% bump in economy (as yet to be verified) vs. the 60e, it's smoother running, quieter on the open road, more authoritive, perfect shifts, and the transmission temp is doing precisely what I would like it to do. 8 years in the making makes far more sense than my lame theory... this is one of those cases where I was over-thinking my observations. I look forward to the refinement of the 60e and I certainly owe somebody a beer (or coffee, if that's your thing).
I wasn't going to say anything publicly yet, but DP-Tuner already knows I'll make it up to them in March. Members stay tuned... something is coming and it will involve all of you.

No apologies needed. Your posts are a joy to read. Thank you for taking the time to post your experience.
Come on brother! I always have coffee on hand.

I don't have the 60E tune, but I have compared the 80E to stock, and 80E got better mpg on highway driving. Not sure if that helps or not haha. I do get a bit of smoke in 80E when downshifting, but it disapears quickly
