well, i just got this truck. 2001 reg cab long bed 2wd diesel w/6 speed. drove it over 2k miles while on vacation and i'd like to take it to the track and see what kinda base time i can get from it before the track closes. then this winter i can do exhaust gauges and a tuner, maybe even from santa lol...
question is, what do you guys recomend me shifting at, should i start in low, or what do i launch at? the truck is TOTALY stock, with 60k on it and i've never raced a diesel truck before lol. i have raced my other cars tho, turbo and supercoupes (tbirds)

Jealous of the mileage!
Good score.
I dont have much experience in the drag. I would wait until you mod it to race it though. But I suppose it wouldn't hurt to run a couple runs just to see your gains for mods. Somebody else will pipe in. Congrats and welcome. Dont forget about intake too!
Although I have an auto tranny I might be a little helpful, maybe. When I floor it and take off like a bat outta hello and it jumps up to a red line it feels like theres a flat spot at the top end and then it shifts and pulls like a mule snapping my head back when the rpms drop again
If I was dragging a 6-speed 7.3, I'd start in "1" (2/6) rather than "L" (1/6)
Each shift will cost you LOTS in time. Shift at HP peak. Not sure what trap speed you'd get, but gearing wise you'll likely be in "4" (5/6) at the end of the 1/4, so three very long shifts that will each lots of time.
The 6-speed isn't exactly a fast shifting gearbox either, wasn't made for 1/4 mile, made to last pulling and hauling.
I used to race a sports compact and I launched at an RPM that will spin the tires, but not have you sitting there spinning on the line.
