New diesel owner. 2005 F-350 6.0 TD, 6" Fabtech lift. I see lots of posts on performance - would like to summarize the best / most common mods for daily use (lots of hwy driving and tow my boat on weekends).
Would like to consider:
Tuners - good / bad / recommended
Exhaust
Air filter / Air intake
Others
Tuner--SCT hands down. Exhaust 3.5/4" turbo back--brand and material (stainless or aluminized) is a personal preference and depends on location (coastal area or high salt use on highways needs SS). MBRP is good. I have magnaflow--it's OK. Intake--STOCK is all that's needed unless you're gonna do some MAJOR horsepower mods. You definitely need gauges FIRST because the factory gauges are nothing but idiot lights with needles. Exhaust second then tuner. Anything after that is a bonus.
Matt of Spartandieseltech is the man to call for your tuner needs. If he doesn't have what you want he'll point you in the right direction.
Well in terms of tuners the general consensus here is that the SCT XCalII is the only choice as longer as it is programmed by a reputable individual such as Matt from Spartan Diesel.
As a general rule all of the in-line chips do the 6.0 more harm than good; a quick search will yield you mountains of information to sort through on this subject.
For intake mods; stick with stock unless you plan on going to 500+ RWHP; then choose you poison...
For exhaust; MRBP has a good reputation; although a 4" turbo back straight pipe seems to yield as good a result as anything.
You should also definitely consider doing an EGR delete as well as a fuel crossover line.
Another popular mod is the power elbow (either from accufab or intake elbows).
The zoodad mad has also been quite popular although the actual effectiveness of the mod has been disputed; it's still fun to do.
There are more mods around than you can shake a stick at; what you really need to do is decide what you want, specifically, then start building. everyone here has always been more than willing to share information.
Yep, call Matt at Spartan then prepare to go broke!! I started just to get a bit more power. Yeah, seriously, that's ALL I started out to do. Now I gotta daily driven dragster and a permanent smile and a couple maxed out credit cards.
i did a air box... cat delete pipe , and a fuel tuner and it will smoke most sports cars
i took the fuel tuner off beacuse the trans shift point were not right for it.. but SCT does sound good
A straight piped diesel doesn't sound at all like a gasser unless you're just hammer down. Basically they're really quiet, so pick a good quality system that fits well and will resist the elements in your area, i.e. aluminum (cheaper but will corrode) or stainless (more expensive but will probably wear out the vehicle). If you want quiet then keep the Cat and use the muffler that comes with your exhaust. They're all pretty quiet with a muffler.
Cheap mods that probably won't void your warranty. Changed my muffler to a Walker Big Truck Muffler. Did the Zoodad mod. Changed to a Power Elbow. Changed to Rotella Synthetic.
