1st in a ZF5 is not a granny. You need a ZF6 for that. Starting in 2nd justs puts more wear and tear on your clutch. I think it's fair to say if you kill the engine just getting the truck rolling from a stop sign, you probably ought to be using a lower gear.

i found out that just becuase i have a bid expensive clutch DOES NOT mean you can be doing 4 wheel launch's and burn outs and what not. i dropped a nice dime on a valair clutch and almost exactly a year later i was replacing it with another one. and the one i have id say is a litttttle stronger than a stocker.
word of advance, slip the least amount possible and stay away from high revs when slipping/launching the truck.
if you want the fun stuff save up for a triple disk! lol
I have 4.10 gears and I always use first gear. Yes it is only for a second then shift then two seconds and shift into third and away we go.
My truck does not like starting in second gear at all. I even do better times at the strip when I use first. Go figure.
When starting at a red light I start in first and I am shifting into third by the time I cross the other side of the intersection.
Starting in second will wear the clutch prematurely.
Same way for me, I limit slippage as much as possible. The topic is takeoff but I just tend to baby my rig. I will punch it in 3rd once in a while to blow the cobwebs out but that's about it. Any sort or premature wear is out of the budget.
