Is it possible to have the clutch slipping at 50mph? when cruising on the highway, it feels like something is slipping and surging, but the engine seems to be running fine. any ideas?
i have a 66 f250 4x4 4 speed with 4.565 gears....stock 352
I'd say yes. I usually have dying clutches slip on me under load in the higher gears. You may try climbing a reasonably steep hill with it one gear higher than normal. It will usually slip if it's worn out.
Now that you mention it, I do climb a hill in 4th gear on my way to work and it does not slip. I only seems to do it when i'm at high rpm. like when i'm cruising on the highway....
does that still sound like a worn clutch?
If your SURE it's no slipping lugging up a hill in 4th its probably not on the highway.
Since your having problems...I would.......
1 Check clutch adjustment...Push on the pedal with your hand do you have free play at the top of the stroke before it gets hard to push?
2 When you drive it how far off the floor do you let the clutch out till the truck starts moving??
Don't know what the book says on these trucks....But you need to have some freeplay at the top of the stroke.... a couple inches to be safe...If you don't have freeplay then the linkage will not let the pressure plate press fully on the clutch disk, hence slipping clutch.
I would say i'm sure it's not slipping going uphill in 4th. The pedal does have about 2 to 3 inches of free play, and the truck starts moving about halfway through the release of the pedal.
I did notice some clunking when I shift. I assume I need U-joints. Could they be causing this effect?
Sounds like you better get under it and start shaking things..check the yokes on the trans and rear end to make sure they are not loose ,and slip joint at carrier bearing if applicable....And of course your U joints, this could be clunking but not slipping.
I have never seen it on a car or pickup, but on big trucks I have seen yokes that ran loose for along time, and wore the splines to where they would start slipping a ratcheing. Made a hell of a racket when they slipped though.
This surging affect I am not clear on....does the engine free rev and the truck not pickup speed?
When you do check the the driveshaft, yokes, U joints, etc. chock the tires, parking brake on, truck in neutral, so there is no pressure on the shaft..this is important.
the engine does not rev higher when the surging occurs. I will get under it this weekend and let you know what I find out. Thanks again for the info and good ideas....
o.k so I worked on it this weekend, and replaced all u-joints (which were not bad) and replaced all fluids. but while I had the driveshafts out, I checked that the transfer case and every thing else was tight. and it was except the klunk I was hearing was coming from the transfer case input, output yokes. if I were to twist them in opposite directions, I could produce the loud klunk. I'm not sure what i could do about this. The nut that goes into each yoke would adjust the yoke for in and out play, not play inside, where the gears meet. so I guess that is just going to have to be. Unless you guys have any ideas........
but the surging is still there.....I read a post where someone described a clutch that was replaced and working o.k, but the flywheel was not resurfaced and caused the clutch to feel "jerky". does that sound like a possibility????
sorry for the long post, I'm trying to follow up on my posts....
