I was tooling around town testing my TQ lock-up proplem when I noticed the "engine temp" warning light (next to the "wait") came on. I looked at the temp stock idiot temp gauge and it was right where it normally sits about 1/4 swing from the left side of gauge.
I also noted that the "engine temp" light was not always bright and changed intensity with rpm. Sometimes it would get reeal fim and then it would go out and then come back on. Temp gauge is rock solid. I went on home and pulled my heat gun. Took readings at the top of radiator and it was about 185 degrees. No evidence of actual overheating.
I suspect the light is wrong and temps are fine. So - what turns on the engine temp lamp? Another one of those gremlins to brighten my day.
The temp light unit is on the front of the drivers side head beside the valve cover with a single wire to it. Check that the wire and connector are good but possibly a bad sender unit.
i've seen those sensors fail before. i used to have an LTD with one idiot light for temp and oil, started doing like yours, installed mechanical gages and left it unplugged. in hindsight, having the idiot light plus gage is a GREAT combination
get a new sensor and you'll be good
Took awhile to find it. Didn't see it until I removed the air intake hose. Cleaned and greased it - new one on order - quess we'll see from there. Like the idea of a real gauge and idiot light. Running out of gauge room. lol
