You can use an iron to solder 10-gauge wire, you just have to go in fourths and rotate, then reflow everything. If you take your time, it comes out really well. A gun would be easier for this though. A magnetic field that a gun might put out is not going to cause any damage to anything on the vehicle.
I highly recommend Weller; they're about the highest quality you can get for most DIY budgets. There is better stuff out there (OKi), but that stuff is more suited for commercial stuff. We use those at work.
I have a flux syringe that I got at Fry's made by MG Chemicals. A lot of that type stuff can be found at electronics shops, Mouser, Digi-Key, and sometimes even Amazon (I got my dry tip cleaner from Amazon).
