Unhappy Speedo messed up

I have a 87 F-150 4x4. I was on the highway travelling, and i was doing just over 160km/h. Then all of a sudden my speedo starting acting crazy. The needle bouces really bad. When i am going anywhere for 0-50km/h, the needle jsut bouces really faast going down to 0 then back up to like 60. I have to being goign a steady speed then it will read the speed i am going, but will still bouce slighty. How can i fix this?

I think you still have the mechanical speedo? The newer ones are electronic I think. Anyway, if you have the mechanical speedo, get under the truck, and look coming out of the side of the tranny or the transfer case(4x4) for a cable. Take the cable out, and then take the housing out where the cable screwed on. You will see a plastic gear. See if the teeth are ok. You can also twirl the small cable inside the larger cable you took off, and see if it turns freely. This is what drives the speedo. All this is for a mechanical speedo though.
