Question Speedo cable replacement.

Hope someone can help me here. I know this probably sounds very simple, but I've never had to do it before. The speedo cable is broken on the '85 F-150 I recently bought, and I'm not sure how to replace it. Please help. Can't find it in the Haynes manual.

One end should screw into the rear area of the tranny, the top end goes into the back of the speedometer head. Not sure about Fords, but GMs have a little catch you press to release it from the speedo unit. If you have speed control, it would be a two piece cable, the control unit in the middle.

Hi Mith. Do you know for sure that the speedo is broken? The speedo cable goes into the back of the gearbox (output shaft) via a 3/8 bolt, take out the bolt and the speedo cable will come out, on the end of the speedo cable will be a speedo drive gear held on with a metal clip, check to see if this is worn, if not, put your finger in the hole where the speedo cable came out of, you will be able to feel another gear, check to see if this is worn. Also take of the speedo gear from the end of the speedo cable (take of metal clip) and attached a drill to the spindle, turn on and see if speedo is operating. Try all this and you will narrow your problem down. Good luck with your truck.
