I made good progress removing my turbo to clean it for sticky veins.
Even the dreaded rear bolt didn't give me any trouble.
I'm stuck now trying to pry the uppipe and downpipe from the turbo.
I can't get any leverage and just end up bending the heat shield.
Do the clamps need to be completely removed or just loosened?
The downpipe looks like it fits over a flange on the turbo housing?
Do I need to loosen them at the exhaust manifold?
this is a tip a ford mechanic gave me for this. take an air chisel and with the clamp undone hit the turbo housing with the chisel for a few seconds and the pipes will seperate just from the vibration
I like to undo (loosen) the up-pipe bolts (two on each pipe) to give some wiggle room. This especially helps on the re-installation and getting everything lined up. The air chisel trick is a great tip. The clamps need to rotate very loosely on the pipe to make sure they aren't catching a lip.
If you live up north where salt is used, you'll want to replace those bolts anyway. Down here in LA - we don't see much salt on the roads - just in the air.
Make sure you have the down pipe loose from the cat. I didn't loosen my up pipe bolts but if you can that would help. Then take a pry bar and pry the left side of the turbo at the left front turbo mount bolt and roll it out to the left. It will come.
John once the clamps are lose or bolts take a long screw driver put against clamps and hit it lightly it will pop lose , mine were same way once they pop lose turbo will come out.
Be prepared for the "how do I get these damn pipes lined up" questions when I go to reinstall .
I always loosen the manifold to up-pipe bolts and EGR cooler bolt before I uninstall/reinstall the turbo. I've never had any luck smacking it back in place with a BFH......

Now - any tips on separating the central housing from the turbo. I've tried by biggest BFH and it's barely budging. The TSB suggests using a brass drift. Is that a brass chisel? My LAPS has brass punches but don't see how that would help.
