i'm changing out the crush gaskets in between the up pipe and the y pipe, and i cannot get the y pipe and the turbo to lign up, i've tried to loosen up the flange on the y pipe where the up pipes meet and install the pedistal and turbo, clamp the y and turbo together to align everything up, then i tighten up the flanges as much as possible and everytime i remove the turbo and pedistal to get to the y pipe flange bolts to tighten them up the y pipe moves. what a pain in the but!!!!!!!
i've been at it since 11am. anyone have any tricks to get everything lined up??
i need to get this together tonight. thanks in advanced
there is a little dowel that sticks out of the collector, that mates in a hole in the actual turbine housing. if you just put the turbo on the pedestal, and slap the clamp over, you may not get it in there. you need to unbolt the turbo from the pedestal, (make sure the o-rings stay in place), then lift the front of the turbo so it will rotate and pop into place. once it is in place, there will be no gap between the turbine flange and the flange on the exhaust collector.
my problem wasn't getting the pin to align, i could get the flange to algin on the back of the turbo then it would not align with the pedistal, and vice versa. i tried to flex it to get it lined up but it was too much. the problem was getting the y pipe outlet flange back in the correct posistion after removing it.
i finally got it right after the 5th time, and just got back from a test ride, and turbo response has increased dramatically!! it must have been leaking real bad
Bloomy glad you got it fixed - we did those crush gaskets on my buddy's truck a couple months ago.... AFTER we had the collector pulled off.... I was laying there on top of the motor and I was thinking "DOH - how the HELL am I gonna get that thing back on exactly right - just the way it was.... ...@$#%&*(@()!^#%@$ "
Somehow - we must have gotten VERY lucky and got the collector pipe bolted back on the up-pipes at the same spot - because everything lined up fine when we put 'er back together...
