My girlfriend went to buy some fast food in the truck. When she got the food and got back in the truck, she tried starting it and the battery exploded! I've never seen anything like it. I'm not sure exactly what caused it, but my battery cables were pretty corroded. So I bought new cables and a battery. I installed everything, but am getting no power to any of the accessories with the battery connected. I'm pretty new to all of this. Where should I start troubleshooting?
Nat, this is a puzzling one. The guys are quiet because the symptoms don't add up.
Tell us if the thing started after you replaced the battery and cables.
Accessories are powered off a connection from the up side of the solenoid that connects directly to the battery. The fact that you have no ACC indicates a break in this wire, a bad connection- perhaps at the solenoid lug- or a bad switch. How this caused a battery to explode is a headscratcher.
I would start by pulling off all connections to the solenoid and scuffing them up with sandpaper. If the cables were corroded it is likely that these connections are too. Then you will have to see if you have power at the BAT connection on the ignition switch.
A locked-up starter can cause a dead short across the battery and produce a current draw that can explode a battery. How this can cause your dead ACC is a mystery.
I hope this helps. It is my best shot.
Good luck, let us know what you find.
I've seen a good clueless samaritan put cables on a battery backwards after trying to help someone with a jump start, and that blew up the battery...can't figure out how yours blew up from the description unless it was wired wrong and the starter shorted or burned out. There may be a melted fuse or fusible link between the battery/solenoid and the ACC/ignition switch.
