'99 F250 SD 7.3 turbo NO START when cold

Okay, so I have a problem. My truck won't start (rolls over, gets fuel, and attempts to fire sometimes) when it is less than 45 degrees or so and the engine is cold (hasn't run for at least 4 hours). This is in Michigan, so that's going to be quite a problem this winter.

Anyway, I replaced all the glow plugs thinking that was the issue (they were quite burnt and had alot of buildup on them), and the next morning I still had the same problem. Let the truck warm up with the day (outside temps around 60 or so) and it would fire right up, but smoked like crazy. Didn't try the truck this morning, but this afternoon (70 degrees out) and the truck again started just fine, but smoked alot. I believe some oil may have run down into the cylinders when I changed the plugs, so I don't know if that is the issue or not.

My brother in law is a Master Diesel Mechanic, and he suggested the glow plug solenoid, though I have not had a chance to check that yet. I know all the plugs are reconnected properly, and the 'wait to start' light comes on and goes out after a few seconds, just as it should...so I'm at a bit of a loss. Any ideas would be appreciated. Also, where is the glow plug solenoid located, so I can check the right one?

Depending on the build date of your truck, you might have two solenoids on top of the engine. Swap them and see if it makes any difference.

Realize this is old, and I actually sold the truck a few weeks ago, but I feel an update is necessary.

It was indeed the solenoid, though my truck only had the one, it did not have an intake heater solenoid. Replaced that and the start issue went away. As for the smoke, apparently the 7.3 does not like to be flooded - it took out the injector o-rings. Actually replacing them did not take too long once I had the removal tool, and at $80 per pair, the o-ring kits weren't a bad deal either. Smoke and start issues solved!
